 I. [שָׁמֵן] verb grow fat (Late Hebrew Hiph`il id., also שֶׁמֶן Arabic be fat; Aramaic especially derived species and derivatives; שְׁמֵין adjective fat: Assyrian šammu, fat; Phoenician (Punic) שמן oil, so Palmyrene שמנא Lzb378; on relation of meanings Frä147); —

Qal Perfect 2 masculine singular שָׁמַ֫נְתָּ Deuteronomy 32:15 and Imperfect 3 masculine singular וַיִשְׁמַן Deuteronomy 32:15 both of Israel (prosperous and arrogant) under figure of fat beast; so Perfect 3 plural שָֽׁמְנוּ Jeremiah 5:28 (of wicked).

Hiph`il Imperfect 3 masculine plural וַיַשְׁמִינוּ Nehemiah 9:25 were sated and shewed fatness (inner causative); Imperative masculine singular הַשְׁמֵן Isaiah 6:10 make fat (dull, unreceptive), לֵב הָיָם הַוֶּה.

Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

שָׁמֵן fut. יִשְׁמַן to be fat, to be fattened, Deuteronomy 32:15; Jeremiah 5:28. (Arab. سمن id.)


(1) to cover, to cover with fat, metaph. i.e. to cover over the heart as it were with fat, to render it callous so as not to heed the words of the prophet, Isaiah 6:10.

(2) to be fattened, pr. to make fat, to produce it from oneself, Nehemiah 9:25.

Derivatives, שָׁמֵן-שְׁמַנִּים, אַשְׁמַנִּים, מִשְׁמָן, מַשְׁמַנִּים and pr.n. מִשְׁמַנָּה.

שָׁמֵן m. שְׁמֵנָה f. fat, Isaiah 30:23 used of a robust man, Judges 3:29 (see מִשְׁמָן ); of a land, Numbers 13:20 of bread, Genesis 49:20.
