Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

פַּרְתְּמִים pl. nobles, chief men among the Persians, Esther 1:3, 6:9 the Jews, Daniel 1:3. A word of Persian origin, which is in the Pehlevi language pardom, first; (see Anquetil du Perron, Zend-Avesta, ii. p. 468); compare Sanscr. prathama, first. In the Zendic language, instead of this is used peoerîm (compare Sanscr. pura, former, before that; purâna, old). From the former comes the Gr. πρῶτος; from the latter, Lat. primus.
