 [עָתַם] verb dubious;

Niph`al Perfect 3 masculine singular נֶעְתַּםאָ֑רֶץ Isaiah 9:18 ( is be clogged in speech, suffocating heat, burned by heat; hence Thes scorched, but derived sense dubious; see RS JPhil. xiii. 61f.); — read perhaps נִצְּתָה (√ יָצַת) is burned up, compare RS l.c., Krochm Kit Che Hpt.

Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

עָתַם a root ἅπ. λεγόμ., which seems to have been of the same or a similar meaning, as תָּמַם (cogn. שָׁמַם). Hence

Niphal, Isai. 9:18, נֶעְתַּם אֶרֶץ “the earth is consumed,” or “laid waste.” Kimchi and Aben. Ezra, the earth is darkened; comp. Arab. عتم to be darkened; LXX. συγκέκαυται, Ch. חֲרוֹכַת burned up [this is the meaning given in Thes.]; compare Arab. غَتْمُ a great and almost suffocating heat.
