(1) a Levite, chief of the singers appointed by David, 1 Chronicles 16:5, who is celebrated in a later age as a poet and prophet (2 Chronicles 29:30), to whom the twelve psalms 50 -7383 are ascribed in their titles, and whose descendants (בְּנֵי אָסָף), even in the time of Ezra and Nehemiah, are mentioned as having occupied themselves with sacred verse and song (1 Chronicles 25:1; 2 Chronicles 20:14, 29:13 Ezra 2:41, 3:10 Nehemiah 7:44, 11:22 ).
