עָשָׁן m. constr. [עֲשַׁן also] עֶשֶׁן (as if from עָשֵׁן).
(1) smoke, Genesis 15:17; Job 41:12. Poet. used of the anger of God, Psalms 18:9, עָלָה עָשָׁן בְּאַפּוֹ “smoke went up in his nostrils,” an image taken from horses or lions, which, when excited with anger, breathe strongly through their nostrils, Isaiah 65:5. Used of a cloud of dust, Isaiah 14:31 compare fumantes pulvere campos, Virg. Æn. xi. 909.
