Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

עָטַף fut. יַעֲטֹף.

(1)  to cover, to cover over, i.q. עָטָה, for which this verb is often used in the Targums. (Arab. عطف IV. to be on, Syr. ܥܛܰܦ to be clothed. Cognate and synonymous roots are עָלַף, עוּף, עָטָה.) Followed by לְ Psalms 73:6, יַטֲָף־שִׁית חָמָס לָמוֹ “a garment of violence covers them;” they are altogether covered over with iniquity, as with a garment. Compare לָבַשׁ.

(2) to be covered, to be clothed. Followed by an acc. Ps. 65:14, עֲמָקִים יַֽעַטְפוּ בָר “the valleys are covered over with corn.” Absol. to hide, or cover over oneself. Job 23:9, יַעְטֹף יָמִין “(if) he cover himself over (i.e. hide) in the south.” Hence מַעְטָפוֹת garments.

(3) to be wrapped in darkness, to languish, to faint (comp. the synonyms עוּף Nos. 3, 4, עָטָה, עָלַף). Used of the heart or soul, Psalms 61:3, 102:1 Isaiah 57:16. Part. pass. עָטוּף fainting, Lamentations 2:19 weak (used of lambs), Genesis 30:42.

Niphal, i.q. Kal No. 3, Lamentations 2:11.

Hiphil, id. intrans. to languish, to be feeble, Genesis 30:42.

Hithpael, to languish, to faint, used of the soul, or spirit, Psalms 77:4, 107:5 142:4 143:4 Jonah 2:8.
