סָפַן fut. יִסְפֹּן prop. to cover (comp. the kindred roots צָפַן, שָׂפַן). Hence
(1) to cover, as with beams or rafters; followed by two acc., 1 Kings 6:9, 7:3.
(2) to floor, to cover with boards, 1 Kings 7:7; Jeremiah 22:14; Haggai 1:4.
(3) to hide, to preserve. Deuteronomy 33:21, וַיַּרְא בִּי־שָׁם הֶלְקַת מְחֹקֵק סָפוּן “and he saw a portion assigned by the law-giver there preserved,” (סָפוּן agrees in gender not with חֶלְקָה to which it refers, but with the nearer word מְחֹקֵק, comp. 1 Samuel 2:4 Lehrg. p. 721).
Derived nouns סִפּוּן, סְפִינָה.
