Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

נָפַח i.q. פּוּחַ to blow, to breathe (an onomatop. root. Compare Germ. fachen, anfachen. Arabic نفح and نفخ to blow; فحَّ and فخ express a harsher snorting sound). Specially

(1) to blow upon any one, followed by בְּ, Ezekiel 37:9.

(2) נָפַה בְּאֵשׁ to blow the fire, Ezekiel 22:21 without בְּ, Ezekiel 22:20, and Isaiah 54:16 דּוּד נָפוּחַ a pot blown upon, i.e. boiling upon a blown fire, Job 41:12; Jeremiah 1:13.

(3) to disperse, or cast away by blowing, followed by בְּ Haggai 1:9.

(4) to breathe out (the soul, the life), Jeremiah 15:9.

Pual to be blown, used of a fire, Job 20:26.

Hiphil

(1) with the addition of נֶפֶשׁ to cause to breathe out the soul, Job 31:39 a hyperbolical expression for to extort sighs, to torment miserably.

(2) to blow away, metaph. i.q. to value lightly, to despise, Malachi 1:13.
