Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

מַס m. tribute. (Commonly taken from מָסַס because tribute is “virium dissolutio et confectio,” a derivation which can hardly seem suitable to any one. I have no doubt that מַס is contr. from מֶכֶס tribute, toll, from the root כָּסַס to number, like the fem. מִסָּה measure, number, for מִכְסָה. Many examples of the softening of the letters ks, or ξ at the end of words by the rejection of k, are found in Gr. and Lat., as Ajax, Αἴας, pistrix, pistris, πίστρις; ὄρνις, Dor. ὄρνιξ, mixtus, mistus; sestersius for sextertius; also x and ss between two vowels like the Hebrew micsa, missa: Ulixes, Ulysses; μαλάσσω, malaxo; also maximus, and Ital. massimo: Alexander and Alessandro.) Almost always used of tribute rendered by labour, servile work, angaria; fully מָס עֹבֵד (servile tribute), 1 Kings 9:21; 2 Chronicles 8:8. Of frequent use are the phrases הָיָה לָמַס Deuteronomy 20:11; Judges 1:30, 33 Judges 1:33, 35 Judges 1:35; Isaiah 31:8 and הָיָה לְמַס עֹבֵד Genesis 49:15; Joshua 16:10 to be liable to impressment for servile work. Without עֹבֵד id., hence נָתַן לָמַס Joshua 17:13 שׂוּם לָמַס Judges 1:28 and שׂוּם מַס עַל Esther 10:1, to lay servile work upon any one; אֲשֶׁר עַל הַמַּס superintendent of works, or of impressment, 2 Samuel 20:24; 1 Kings 4:6, 12:18 plur. שָׂרֵי מִסִּים superintendents of works, task-masters, Exodus 1:11.
