II. מוֺרֶה noun masculine Isaiah 30:20 teacher; — absolute in אֵלוֺן מוֺרֶה Genesis 12:6 (J) = אֵלוֺנֵי מֹרֶה Deuteronomy 11:30 (⅏ᵐ5 אֵלוֺן), the teacher's terebinth (see אֵלוֺן) near Shechem; compare גִּבְעַת הַמּוֺרֶה Judges 7:1 teacher's hill near the plain of Jezreel, probably Little Hermon, Nebî Daµî Bd Pal 244; the terebinth being a holy tree from which divine teaching was given, and the hill of the teacher the seat of a holy place whence divine teaching was given; see also (of God) Job 36:22; here belong probably likewise מוֺרָ֑י Proverbs 5:13, and מוֺרֶיךָ Isaiah 30:20 (twice in verse).
מוֹרֶה m. pr. part. Hiphil, of the root יָרָה
(1) a shooter, darter, archer.
(2) the early rain, see the root Hiphil No. 1, 2.
(3) one teaching, Isaiah 9:14; 2 Kings 17:28 a teacher, in plur. used of prophets, Isaiah 30:20.- Job 36:22, “behold God (is) great, and we know him (not), מִי כָמֹהוּ מוֹרֶה who (is) a teacher like him?” i.e. is wise, and has endued us with wisdom? (comp. Job 35:11, מַלְּפֵנוּ מִבַּהֲמוֹת אָרֶץ וּמֵעוֹף הַשָּׂמַיִם יְחַכְּמֵנוּ). LXX. δυνάστης, perhaps from the Aramean use of ܡܳܪܐܶ, ܡܳܪܝܳܐ lord; and it may be inquired by etymologists whether this very word, and its signification of lord, may not come from the Hebrew מוֹרֶה a teacher. Others regard מוֹרֶה h.l. as i.q. מוֹרָה Psal. 9:21, and מוֹרָא fear, the object of fear and reverence.
(4) [Moreh], pr.name.
(a) of a Canaanite, like Mamre, whence אֵלוֹן מוֹרֶה Genesis 12:6, and אֵלוֹנֵי מוֹרֶה Deuteronomy 11:30, the oak grove of Moreh, not far from Shechem (so called from its possessor).
(b) גִּבְעַת־הַמּוֹרֶה the hill of the teacher, in the valley of Jezreel, Judges 7:1.
I. מוֹרָה masc. (from the root מָרָה to stroke), a razor, Judges 13:5, 16:17 1 Samuel 1:11.
II. מוֹרָה Ps. 9:21 כתיב; i.q. מוֹרָא terror, which is given in קרי by way of explanation.
