לַיִשׁ m.
(1) [In Thes. from לוּשׁ], a lion, so called from his strength, Isaiah 30:6; Job 4:11; Proverbs 30:30. (Arab. لَيْثُ, Chald. לַיִת, Gr. λῖς, ap. Hom. id.)
(2) [Laish], pr.n.
(a) of a place on the northern borders of Palestine, elsewhere called לֶשֶׁם and דָּן (which see), Judges 18:7, 29 Judges 18:29 with the addition of ־ָה local, Isaiah 10:30, where others understand some other town near Jerusalem to be intended; see Comment. on the place.
(b) of a man, 1 Samuel 25:44, and 2 Samuel 3:15 קרי.
