חָנֵס once Isaiah 30:4 [Hanes], pr.n. of a city of middle Egypt, situated on an island to the west of the Nile; called by the Greeks Heracleopolis, Ἡρακλέους πόλις, Arabic اهناس, in Egyptian ⲍⲛⲉⲥ, ⲍⲛⲏⲥ, ⲉⲍⲛⲏⲥ, formerly a royal city of Egypt; see Etienne Quatremère, Mémoires sur l’Egypte, t. i. p. 500, 501.
