In Hebrew thought, a wall is more than a vertical barrier but anything that separates or divides. The hearth around the fire protected the house from the heat and embers of the fire.

אֹחַ only in pl. אֹחִים prop. howlings; hence howling animals (comp. אִי No. II.), probably screech owls, Isaiah 13:21. A word imitating the sound, like the Germ. Uhu, Schubut, French hibou; see אָח No. II. and the root אָחַח.
