Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

אוֹדוֹת pl. prop. turnings; see the root No. 1, whence causes, circumstances, Umftände, reasons, affairs; comp. سَبَبُ cause, from the root סָבַב to turn, to turn round; حَالُ way, manner, cause, from حَاَلَ, חוּל to be turned; Germ. um for wegen; בִּגְלַל on account of, from גָּלַל. It is only used in the phrase עַל־אוֹדוֹת i.q. עַל דְּבַר, עַל דִּבְרֵי on account of the causes, i.e. on account of, Genesis 21:11, 25 Genesis 21:25, 26:32 Exodus 18:8, and with suff. עַל אוֹדוֹתַי for my sake, Joshua 14:6. עַל כָּל־אֹדוֹת אֲשֶׁר “for these very causes that,” gerade deshalb weil, Jeremiah 3:8. As to the reading of the editions in 2 Samuel 13:16, אַל אוֹדוֹת it appears to have arisen from the blending of two readings, the one אֶל אוֹדוֹת, the other עַל אוֹדוֹת.
