גָּעַל to loathe, to reject with loathing, to cast away (Ch. Ithpeal, to be unclean, impure, see גָּאַל No. II.; whence the notion of loathing may be derived, that is, to regard as impure, foul, comp. זָהַם). There often occurs גָּֽעֲלָה נַפְשִׁי אֵת “my soul loatheth any thing,” Leviticus 26:11, 15 Leviticus 26:15, 30 Leviticus 26:30, 43 Leviticus 26:43 followed by בְּ Jeremiah 14:19 and withont נֶפֶשׁ Leviticus 26:44; Ezekiel 16:45.
Niphal, to be cast away. 2 Samuel 1:21, כִּי שָׁם נִגְעַל מָגֵן גִּבּוֹרִים “for there the shield of the mighty was cast away;” “ibi enim abjectus est clypeus heroum,” as well in the Vulg., LXX. προσωχθίσθη.
Hiphil i.q. Kal, Job 21:10, שֹׁורוֹ עִבַּד וְלֹא יַגְעִל “his cow conceiveth and casteth not,” does not suffer abortion. Vulg. “bos eorum concepit, et non abortivit;” so also Aqu., Symm., LXX. I prefer however, “taurus ejus init vaccam, neque abjicit,” sc. semen; i.e. the coitus is not fruitless, the cows conceive; so that the fruitful breeding would be spoken of in the former hemistich, in the latter the prosperous birth.
