גָּנַב fut. יִנְנֹב.
(1) to steal, to take away by theft, secretly. (This verb appears to be denominative from the Arab. جَنْبُ a side, Ch. גַּב and prop. equivalent to, to put aside; Germ. auf die Seite bringen.) [“Compare Sanscrit parçvaka thief, from parçva side.”] Hence جنب has many significations taken from the idea of side, to break a side, to take from the side.) Followed by an acc. of thing, Genesis 31:19, 30 Genesis 31:30, 33 Genesis 31:33 and person, 2 Samuel 19:42; Deuteronomy 24:7; Job 21:18, וּכְמֹץ גְּנָבַתּוּ סוּפָה “and like the chaff, which the wind driveth away;” 27:20. Part. pass. with Yod parag. גְּנֻבְתִי Genesis 31:39.
(2) to deceive, like the Gr. κλέπτειν. Genesis 31:27, וַתִּגְנֹב אֹתִי “thou hast deceived me.” Especially followed by לֵב prop. to deceive any one’s heart, i.e. understanding, like κλέπτειν νόον, Hom. Il. xiv. 227. Genesis 31:20, וַיִּגְנֹב יַעֲקֹב אֶת־לֵב לָבָן “and Jacob deceived Laban;” verse 26 Genesis 31:26. See L. de Dieu, on Gen. loc. cit., and John 10:24.

Pual pass. Job 4:12, אֵלַי דָּבָד יְגֻנָּב “an oracle was brought to me by stealth,” or secretly. Inf. absol. גֻּנֹּב Genesis 40:15.
Hithpael, to do by stealth, followed by a gerund, 2 Samuel 19:4, וַיִּתְגַּנֵּב הָעָם בַּיוֹם הַהוּא לָבוֹא הָעִיד “and the people that day went by stealth into the city.” (Syr. ܓܢܰܒ ܢܦܰܫܶܗ to steal oneself away.) Hence
