גַּו with suff. גַּוִּי m. the back (from the root גָּוָה No. I); in one phrase הִשְׁלִיךְ אַחֲרֵי גַוּוֹ “to cast behind one’s back,” i.e. to neglect, to despise. 1 Kings 14:9; Ezekiel 23:35; Nehemiah 9:26 comp. הִשְׁלִיךְ. The same is often used in Arabic, جعل بظهره, نبذ ورا ظهره.
גַּו Chald. const. גּוֹ and גּוֹא with suff. גַּוֵּהּ, גַּוָּהּ mas. middle, midst, see גָּוָה No. I. (Syr. ܓܘ id. Arab. جَوُ inner part of a house, جَوّاً within.) Hence
(a) בְּגוֹ, בְּגוֹא i.q. בְּתוֹךְ in the midst, and simply in. בְּגוֹ נוּרָא in the fire, Daniel 3:25, 4:7 7:15. בְּגַוָּהּ in it, Ezra 4:15. Ezra 6:2, כֵּן כְּתִיב בְּגַּוַּהּ דִּכְרוֹנָה “so in it (the book) was written a commentary.” Ezra 5:7.
(b) לְגוֹא into, Daniel 3:6, 11:15.
(c) מִן־גּוֹא “out of the midst,” Daniel 3:26.
