βάρος, βαρέος, τό, heaviness, weight, burden, trouble: load, ἐπιτιθεναι τίνι (Xenophon, oec. 17, 9), to impose upon one cult requirements, Acts 15:28; βάλλειν ἐπί τινα, Revelation 2:24 (where the meaning is, 'I put upon you no other injunction which it might be difficult to observe'; cf. Düsterdieck at the passage); βαστάζειν τό βάρος τίνος, i. e. either the burden of a thing, as τό βάρος τῆς ἡμέρας the wearisome labor of the day Matthew 20:12, or that which a person bears, as in Galatians 6:2 (where used of troublesome moral faults; the meaning is, 'bear one another's faults'). αἰώνιον βάρος δόξης a weight of glory never to cease, i. e. vast and transcendent glory (blessedness), 2 Corinthians 4:17; cf. Winer's Grammar, § 34, 3; (πλούτου, Plutarch, Alex. M. 48). weight equivalent to authority: ἐν βαρεῖ εἶναι to have authority and influence, 1 Thessalonians 2:7(6) (so also in Greek writings; cf. Wesseling on Diodorus Siculus 4, 61; (examples in Suidas under the word)). (Synonyms: see ὄγκος.)

BGU I. 159.3 ff. (A.D. 216) (= Chrest. I. p. 486) μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα ἀναδο [θέντο ]ς μου εἰς δη [μοσ ] [α ]ν λειτουργίαν βαρυτάτην οὖσαν ἀπε ̣στ ̣[η ]ν ̣ τῆς κώμης οὐ δυνόμενος ὑποστῆναι τὸ βάρος τῆς λειτουργίας is a good example of the ordinary use of this noun with the corresponding adjective : cf. P Oxy VII. 1062.14 (ii/A.D.) εἰ δὲ τοῦτό σοι βάρος φέρει , ";if it is troublesome"; (Ed.). A ";burden"; of oppression is referred to in Syll 418.67 (A.D. 238) ἐπεὶ οὖν οὐκέτι δυνάμεθα φέρειν τὰ βάρη , and one of taxation in P Giss I. 7.13 (A.D. 117) ἐπεὶ οὖν ὁ κύριος ἡμῶν Ἁδριανὸς . . . ἐκούφισεν τῶν ἐνχωρίων τὰ βάρη καθολικῶς διὰ προγράμματος , ἀχιῶ τοιούτου ὄντος τοῦ βάρους κτλ . It denotes responsibility in ib. 19.18 (ii/A.D.) ἀλλὰ ὡς [καὶ ὁ ἐ ]νθάδε στρατηγὸς τοῖς ἄρχου [σι ἐπιτί ]θησι τὸ βάρος , καὶ σὺ τὸ αὐ [τὸ ποίει . In reference to moral faults (cf. Galatians 6:2), see the Acts of the martyrdom of Christina, PSI 27.7 (v/A.D.) (as amended p. xi) βάρος πάσης ὀργῆς καὶ ἀτίμ [ο ]υ σπέρματος . The word is found in the astrologer Vettius Valens, p. 292.6 ἐν συνοχαῖς καὶ βάρεσι γίνονται ἢ τραυμάτων περιπλοκαῖς : in the Index βάρος is rendered molestia.
