Liddell-Scott-Jones Definitions

ἀφεδρών,

ῶνος, ὁ, (ἕδρα)

privy, OGI 483.220 (Pergam.), Matthew 15:17.

Thayer's Expanded Definition

ἀφεδρών, ἀφεδρωνος, , apparently a word of Macedonian origin, which Suidas calls 'barbarous'; the place into which the alvine discharges are voided; a privy, sink; found only in Matthew 15:17; Mark 7:19. It appears to be derived not from ἀφ' ἑδρων,a podicibus, but from ἄφεδρος, the same Macedon. word which in Leviticus 12:5; Leviticus 15:19ff answers to the Hebrew נִדָּה sordes menstruorum. Cf. Fischer's full discussion of the word in his De vitiis lexamples N. T., p. 698ff

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

This rare word is found in OGIS 483.220 f. (ii/B.C.) in the same sense as in Matthew 15:17, Mark 7:19, the only two occurrences of the word in Biblical Greek—Cod. D substitutes ὀχετόν in Mk. In LXX Leviticus 12:2 ἡ ἄφεδρος is used in another connexion.
