ἆσσον
(Dor. ἄσσιον acc. to Eust. 1643.32), Adv. Comp. of ἄγχι: —
I nearer, esp. of hostile approach, ἆσσον ἴτ' Il. 1.567, al., cf. Hes. Th. 748; τείχεος ἆ. ἴσαν Il. 22.4, cf. Hdt. 4.3, Ar. Eq. 1306; simply of approach, γυναῖχ' ὁρῶ στείχουσαν ἡμῶν ἆ. S. OC 312, cf. El. 900; of a woman, ἥτις ἀνδρῶν ἆ. οὐκ ἐλήλυθεν Ar. Eq. 1306; δίφρον ἆ. ἕλκεται πυρός Semon. 7.26: c. dat., S. OC 722: with double Comp., ἕρποντι μᾶλλον ἆσσον Id. Ant. 1210: Sup. ἄσσιστα A. Fr. 6; ἄσιστα IG 5(2).159.17 (Tegea), Michel 1334 (Elis, iv B. C.).
II hence new Comp. ἀσσοτέρω, with or without gen., Od. 19.506, 17.572; later Comp. Adj. ἀσσότερος, = ἐγγύτερος, Arat. 878: Sup. Adv. ἀσσοτάτω AP 9.430 (Crin.): Sup. Adj. ἀσσότατος ib. 6.345 (Id.).
ἆσσον, adverb, nearer (comparative of ἄγχι near (cf. ἐγγύς)): Acts 27:13 (here Rec.st Ασσον (or Ασσον, which see), Rec.bez elz ἆσσον (cf. Tdf. at the passage); but see Meyer). (Homer, Herodotus, tragic poets; Josephus, Antiquities 19, 2, 4.)
