Vocabulary of the Greek NT

";help,"; ";benefit,"; c. ace. pers. as in Hebrews 4:2, Preisigke 4305.10 (iii/B.C.) εἰ μὴ τὴν μήκωνα (";the poppy";) συνάξεις, μ ̣[η ]δ ̣ε ̣ίς σε ἀνθρώπων μὴ ὠφελήσηι, P Oxy IX. 1219.12 (iii/A.D.) οἶδα ὅτι καὶ ταῦτά μου τὰ γράμματα πόλλ᾽ αὐτὸν ὠφελήσει, ";I know that this letter of mine also will be of much help to him,"; and ib. XII. 1490.4 (late iii/A.D.) λέγει γὰρ ο ̣̓́τι ̣ ὠφέλησα αὐτὸν μεγάλως καὶ ἐν τῇ ἀννώνῃ, ";he says ‘I helped him greatly in the matter of the annona.";

For the verb = ";instruct,"; as frequently in early ecclesiastical writers, cf. Pelagia-Legenden p. 320 οἱ ἐπίσκοποι. . . ἠρώτων τὸν κύριον Νόννον εἰπεῖν καὶ ὠφελῆσαι αὐτούς. According to Field (Notes, p. 21) the meaning ";prevail,"; which is attached to the verb by AV, RV, in Matthew 27:24, John 12:19, seems to require confirmation. MGr φελῶ, ";I assist, am useful"; : ὠφελεῖ, ";it is useful, advantageous.";
