I mostly in pl., boastful promises, boasts, ποῦ τοι ἀπειλαὶ ἃς.. ὑπίσχεο οἰνοποτάζων; Il. 20.83; μέχρι τῶν ἀπειλῶν γενναῖος Lib. Or. 59.118, cf. Eust. 704.28.
II commonly in pl.,
1. threats, ποῦ τοι ἀπειλαὶ οἴχονται τὰς Τρωσὶν ἀπείλεον υἷες Ἀχαιῶν; Il. 13.219; οὐδὲ.. λήθετ' ἀπειλάων τὰς ἀντιθέῳ Ὀδυσῆι πρῶτον ἐπηπείλησεν Od. 13.126, cf. Il. 16.200, Hdt. 6.32; εὐθύνειν ἀπειλαῖς καὶ πληγαῖς Pl. Prt. 325d, cf. A. Pr. 175 (lyr.): in sg., S. Ant. 753, Th. 4.126; ἀπειλῆς ἕνεκα τοῖς ἐν τῷ Ταρτάρῳ Arist. APo. 94b33.

P Ryl II. 114.19 (c. A.D. 280) μετ᾽ ἀπιλῆς με ἀπέπεμψεν ";drove me away with a threat."; BGU IV. 1060.25 (B.C. 23–2) ὅθεν καταπεπονη ̣μένοι προήγμεθα πρὸς ἀπειλαῖς. CP Herm 25ii. 2, a law report, makes an advocate say οὔτε συσκευα [ὶ οὔτε ] ἀπειλαὶ κατεσίγησαν μ ̣[ . . . . . . . ]. P Ryl I. 28.117 (iv/A.D.) the ";quivering"; (see under ἅλλομαι) of the left shin means for a slave ἀπειλαὶ καὶ μόχθοι. In the vi/A.D. inscr. OGIS 521.14 (Abydos) we have ἀεὶ τὴν ἀπιλὴν ἐν τοῖς πράγμασιν ὁρῶντα : Dittenberger accepts the emendation γράμμασιν.
