ill-will or malice, esp. envy or jealousy of the good fortune of others (Pl. Def. 416b, Arist. Rh. 1387b22), Pi. O. 8.55, etc.; φθόνῳ through envy, Hdt. 3.30, 9.71; opp. εὔνοια, Pl. Lg. 635b; opp. ἔπαινος, Lys. 24.1; ἴσχει ὄλβος φθόνον incurs envy, Pi. P. 11.29, cf. Isoc. 5.68; φθόνον πρὸς ἀστῶν ἀλφάνουσι E. Med. 297; φθόνῳ χρῆσθαι πρὸς τὰ παιδικά Pl. II refusal from feelings of ill-will or envy, grudging, φθόνος μὲν οὐδεὶς.. A. Pr. 628; οὐδεὶς φ. or φ. οὐδείς, c. inf., said in granting a request willingly, ἃ τυγχάνω ἀκηκοώς, φ. οὐδεὶς λέγειν Pl. Phd. 61d; οὐδεὶς.. φ. αὐτῷ διελθεῖν αὐτά Id. Sph. 217a, cf. b. Lg. 641d, 664a.
φθόνος, φθόνου, ὁ, from (Pindar and) Herodotus down, envy: Romans 1:29; Galatians 5:21; 1 Timothy 6:4; Titus 3:3; 1 Peter 2:1; διά φθόνον, for envy, i. e. prompted by envy (see διαφθονος B. II. 2b.), Matthew 27:18; Mark 15:10; Philippians 1:15 (Dio Cassius, 44, 36); πρός φθόνον ἐπιποθεῖ τό πνεῦμα ὁ κατῴκησεν (but see κατοικίζω) ἐν ἡμῖν; doth the Spirit which took up its abode within us (i. e. the Holy Spirit) long enviously? (see πρός, I. 3 g.), James 4:5 (but T (WH in second marginal reading) drop the interrogative); see on the passage Grimm in the Theol. Studien und Kritiken for 1854, p. 934ff. BGU III. 925.8 (iii/A.D.) μετὰ τὴ <ν > [ἀ ]ν [άγ ]ν [ωσιν ] ἡ βουλὴ ἐφώνησεν · Ἔλλειμμά ἐστιν. . . , and P Oxy XVII. 2110.6 (A.D. 370) οἱ βουλευταὶ ἐφώνησαν · κύριον τὸ κατὰ κῆραν, ";The senators cried,‘ What is on the tablet is valid’"; (Ed.).The word, which is used of the ";crowing"; of a cock in Mat. 26:34 al., gives place to κοκκύζω in the new Rainer fragment (Mittheilungen aus der Sammlung der Papyrus Erzherzog Rainer, i. p.53 ff., ii.p. 411. : cf. Milligan Here and There, p. 123 ff. ).
From the inscrr. we may cite Syll 737 (= .3 1109).108 (after A.D. 178) μηδεὶς δ᾽ ἔπος φωνείτω, and for the meaning ";address"; followed by a nom. of the title, as in Joh. 13:13, see Blass-Debrunner §§ 143, 147.
