R. 560a; τὸν ἥσσω τῷ κρατοῦντι ὑ. Th. 1.77; but ὑ. τῷ δαίμονι try to escape from.., Plu. Brut. 40. κἀκεῖνος ὑπεχώρησεν αὐτῷ τοῦ θρόνου he (Aeschylus) gave Sophocles a share of the throne, Ar. Ra. 790 (not surrendered it, which would be παρεχώρησεν) ; τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους ἐντρέπεσθαι.. ὁδῶν ὑποχωροῦντας making way for them on the streets (not ' retiring from the streets'), Plu. 2.237d.

3. c. acc., avoid, shun, μηδένα ὄχλον [νεῶν] Ἀθηναῖοι ὄντες ὑποχωρεῖν Th. 2.88; so perh. to be taken in Il. 13.476, μένεν.., οὐδ' ὑπεχώρει, Αἰνείαν ἐπιόντα; cf. Pl. Sph. 240a, D.H. 6.93, Luc. Tox. 36. cede, yield, τὴν δεσποτίαν αὐτοῖς POxy. 67.19 (iv A. D.).

II pass off below, esp. by way of stool, σάρκες Hp. Aph. 4.26, etc.; εἰ ταχέως ὑποχωρεῖ τῶν ὑποχονδρίων Gal. 6.56, cf. 253: in Med., Hp. Aph. 7.67.

III go on steadily, εἰρεσία ὑπεχώρησεν ἐκ παλαμᾶν the rowing went on, stroke after stroke, Pi. P. 4.202. Ἡγέλοχος οὕτω προηνέγκατο (sc. γαλην ὁρῶ) ὥστε μὴ ὑποχωρῆσαι ἐκ τῆς συναλοιφῆς τὸ γαληνά, ἀλλὰ διαχωρῆσαι μᾶλλον, ὥστε δόξαι τὴν γαλῆν εἰπεῖν Sch. Ar. Ra. 305 (dub. sens.).

Thayer's Expanded Definition

ὑποχωρέω, ὑποχώρω; 1 aorist ὑπεχώρησα; from Homer down; to go back (see ὑπό, III. 1 at the end); to withdraw: εἰς τόπον ἔρημον, Luke 9:10; with ἐν and a dative of the place (see ἐν, I. 7), Luke 5:16 (cf. Winers Grammar, § 50, 4 a.; Buttmann, 312 (268)).

";fearful"; (Heb. 10:27, al.) : BGU II.428.8 (ii/A.D.) φοβερὸς ἐγένετο before a lacuna, P Leid Wxii. 9 (ii/iii A.D.) (=11. p. 121) ἐκλήθη δὲ ὀνόματι ἁλίῳ ἀναγραμματιζόμενον (=II. p. 121) ἐκλήθη δὲ ὀνόματι ἁγίῳ ἀναγραμματιζόμενον (= -ένῳ) φωβερῷ καὶ φρεικτῷ (l. φοβερῷ καὶ φρικτῷ) and the magic PSI I. 28.21 (iii/iv A.D.?).
