Vocabulary of the Greek NT

found in the NT only in Hebrews 10:29, conveys like the verb the idea of giving an offender his deserts, without the thought of discipline which normally attaches to κόλασις. So in P Lond 1171 verso (c).12 (A.D. 42) (= III. p. 107) κα ̣τὰ τούτου τῇ ἀνωτάτω χρήσομαι τειμωρίᾳ, a prefect threatens those who employ unauthorized violence and forced labour or extortion towards the natives, P Leid Wvii. 28 (ii/iii A.D.) (= II. p. 105) ὁ κτίσας τὴν ἀναγκή (ν), καὶ τιμωρίαν, καὶ τὴν βάσανον, and BGU IV. 1024iv. 17 (iv/v A.D.) ἐκδέξι το [ίνυν ] τὴ [[η ]]ν ἕως κεφ [αλῆ ]ς τ [ι ]μωρίαν — a sentence of ";capital punishment.";
