recall a person to his senses, chasten, E. Fr. 209, Pl. Grg. 478d, X. Cyr. 8.6.16, etc.; ἡ τοιαύτη ἧττα σωφρονίζειν ἱκανή ib. 3.1.20; τοὺς πονηροτάτους αἱ συμφοραὶ ς. D. 25.93: folld. by inf., ἵνα σωφρονίζωσιν τὰς νέας φιλάνδρους εἶναι κτλ. Titus 2:4 : — Pass., to be chastened, learn self-control, Th. 6.78, X. Cyr. 3.1.19, etc.
