rock over which the sea dashes (opp. ὕφαλοι πέτραι in AP 11.390 ( Lucill. )), νῆάς γε ποτὶ σπιλάδεσσιν ἔαξαν κύματα Od. 3.298; δοῦπον ἄκουσε ποτὶ σπιλάδεσσι θαλάσσης 5.401 (v. πάγος ); ἐφ' ὑψηλαῖς σπιλάδεσσι S. Fr. 371 (lyr.); πλαγκταὶ ς . A.R. 4.932; ς. εἰν ἁλὶ πέτρη Id. 3.1294; ῥεῖθρον ἀπὸ ς . Theoc. Ephesians 4:6 : generally, slab, S. Tr. 678; ὧδ' ὑπὸ τὸ σπιλάδος μέλαθρον, i.e. under this tombstone, Sammelb. 6160 ( Egypt ); hollow rock, cave, Simon. (?) 179 .

spot, κατάστικτον σπιλάδεσσι πυρσῇσιν Orph. L. 620: in Ep.Judges 1:12, σπιλάς spot is prob. in view of 2 Peter 2:13; cf. also σπιλάς (c).

storm, squall, Plu. 2.476a; ἐκραγείσης ὥσπερ ἐν εὐδίᾳ σπιλάδος ib.101b; ἄνδρας αἰφνιδίῳ σπιλάδι κατασεισθέντας Hld. 5.31, cf. AP 7.382.4 ( Phil. ): cf. κατασπιλάζω 11 .

σπιλάς, σπιλαδος, , a rock in the sea, ledge or reef (Homer, Odyssey 3, 298; 5, 401, and in other poets; Polybius, Diodorus, Josephus, b. j. 3, 9, 3); plural, tropically, of men who by their conduct damage others morally, wreck them as it were, equivalent to σκάνδαλα (R. V. text hidden rocks), Jude 1:12 (here L T Tr WH read οἱ (namely, ὄντες) σπιλάδες. Some (so R. V. marginal reading) make the word equivalent to the following; see Rutherford as there referred to.)

1. poët. in cl., a rock or reef over which the sea dashes (Polyb., FlJ, al.). Metaph., of men whose conduct causes danger to others, Judges 1:12, R, txt. (but v. infr.).

2. In late writers = σπίλος (q.v.), a spot, stain; metaph., Ju, l.c., R, mg. (cf. Mayor, 41, but v. supr.).†
