Thayer's Expanded Definition

Σαλήμ, (Heb. שָׁלֵם), Salem: Hebrews 7:1f; cf. Genesis 14:18, which some (as Gesenius, Winer, Hitzig, Knobel, Delitzsch) think is the ancient name of the city of Jerusalem, appealing to the words of Psalm 76:3 סֻכּו בְּשָׁלֵם וַיְהִי, and Josephus, Antiquities 1, 10, 2 τήν μέντοι Σολυμα ὕστερον ἐκάλεσαν Ἱεροσόλυμα; cf. b. j. 6, 10. But more correctly (yet cf. B. D. under the word , and under the word under the end) others (as Rosenmüller, Bleek, Tuch, Roediger in Gesenius Thesaurus under the word, p. 1422, Dillmann), relying on the testimony of Jerome ((Ep. ad Evangelum § 7 i. e.) Epistle 73 in Vallarsi's edition of his works, i., p. 446), hold that it is the same as Σαλείμ (which see). For the ancient name of Jerusalem was יְבוּס (Judges 19:10; 1 Chronicles 11:4; (cf. B. D. American edition, under the word )), and the form of the name in Psalm 76:3 (where the Sept. εἰρήνη) is to be regarded as poetic, signifying 'safe.'

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

";a vessel"; (Romans 9:21 al.). This common noun is used with a variety of applications, e.g. P Eleph 14.21 (iii/B.C.) ἔκ τ ̣ε ̣ κ ̣τ ̣ηνῶν καὶ σκευῶν, P Petr III. 107 (d)i. 25 (iii/B.C.) fares are paid for the conveyance τῶν Ἀγήνορος σκευῶν, ";of Agenor’s furniture,"; P Ryl II. 138.23 (A.D. 34) ἐρίων σταθμία ι ̄ε ̄ καὶ ἕτερα σκεῦη, ";15 measures of wool, as well as other implements,"; P Oxy I. 105.4 (A.D. 117–137) σκεύη καὶ ἔπιπλα, ";movables and household stock,"; P Tebt II. 381.13 (A.D. 123) (= Selections, p. 78) σκεύηι καὶ ἐνδομενίαν καὶ ἱματισμόν, ";utensils and household-stock and clothing,"; and P Grenf II. 77.14 (iii/iv A.D.) (= Selections, p. 120) χάριν τῶν σκευῶν αὐτοῦ, ";on account of his goods.";

For σκεῦος = ";(a ship’s) tackle,"; as in Acts 27:17, cf. P Cairo Zen I. 59031.10 (B.C. 258) ἀδύνατογ γάρ μοι δ ̣ο ̣κεῖ ει ̣͂̔ναι ἄνευ τῶν ἀναγκαίω ̣ν σκευ ̣ῶν πλεῖν τὰ πλοῖα, and Syll 537 (= .3969).3 (B.C. 347–6) σ ]υνγραφαὶ τῆς σκευοθήκης τῆς λιθίνης τοῖς κρεμαστοῖς σκεύεσιν. In the new uncanonical gospel, P Oxy V. 840.14, τὰ ἅγια σκεύη are ";the holy vessels"; of the temple : cf. Hebrews 9:21. See also Plut. Mor. 812 σκεῦος ἱερόν. On σκεῦος = ";body"; rather than ";wife"; in 1 Thessalonians 4:4, see Milligan ad l.

For the dim. σκευάριον see P Lond 46.211 (iv/A.D.) (= I. p. 72) σκευάριον καλλάϊνον μικρό (ν), and for σκευασία P Leid Xv. 33 (iii/iv A.D.) (= I. p. 217) χρυσοκόλλου σκευσία (l. σκευασία.)

In P Petr II. 13 (10).5 (B.C. 258–253) Deissmann (BS p. 158) understands σκεοφύλακα as = σκευοφύλακα, ";keeper of baggage"; (cf. ib. 5 (a).3), and in P Amh II. 62 (ii/B.C.) three persons called Ἀπολλώνιος are distinguished as ";the dark"; (μέλας), ";the fair"; (λευκός), and ";the baggage-carrier"; (σκευοφ (όρος)).
