ῥιπτ-έω, used only in pres. and impf., collat. form of ῥίπτω, first in Od., ἀν-ερρίπτουν ἅλα πηδῷ 13.78, where it suits the metre (but not the Ion. dialect); so in Ar., ῥιπτεῖτε χλαίνας Ec. 507; διαρριπτοῦντε Id. V. 59; in Trag. ῥιπτέω is never either guaranteed or disproved by the metre, ῥιπτείσθω A. Pr. 1043 (anap., cod. Med. ), ῥιπτεῖ S. Aj. 239 (anap.), Ant. 131 (anap.), Tr. 780, ῥιπτεῖν E. Tr. 734 cod. P, ῥιπτοῦνθ' Hel. 1096 cod. L, ῥιπτοῦντες Heracl. 149 codd. LP; ῥίπτετ' and ἔρριπτον are guaranteed by the metre in E. HF 941, Ba. 1097, so that ῥίπτων, ῥίπτει may be accepted in E. Ba. 150 (lyr.), Hel. 1325 (lyr.); ῥιπτέω is found also in Prose, ῥιπτεῦσι Hdt. 4.94 (v.l.); ῥιπτέουσι ib. 188, cf. 7.50 ( ἀνα- ), 8.53, Th. 4.95 ( ἀνα- ), Pl. Ti. 80a, Arist. Ph. 266b30, Mu. 396a2, Plb. 1.47.4, al., Agatharch. 26; ῥειπτουμένων OGI 629.158 (Palmyra, ii A.D. ), etc.

";make to rot."; The verb is found in the NT only in James 5:2 in 2nd perf. act. with an intrans. sense ";am rotten"; (cf. Proleg. p. 154) : cf. P Oxy X. 1294.13 (ii/iii A.D.) μελη ]σάτω δέ σοι τῶν ἐν τῷ χειλώματι ἵνα μὴ σαπῇ, ";take care of the things in the box lest they rot"; (Edd.), ib. XII. 1449.51 (A.D. 213–17) τὰ δὲ ἱμάτια πάντ (α) ἀπὸ τ (οῦ) χρό (νου) σεση (μμένα) ἄχρηστ (α), ";and all the clothing decayed with age and useless"; (Edd.), and the late P Amh II. 153.19 (vi/vii A.D.) ἵνα ὁ θεὸς σήψῃ τὴν ψυχήν σου ὡς διέσηψάς με εἰς τὴν κατ [α ]γραφὴν ταύτην, ";may God destroy your soul if you destroy me in the matter of this register"; (Edd.).
For the subst. cf. BGU IV. 1116.26 (B.C. 13) πλὴν τριβῆς καὶ σήψεως, and the quotation from Photius Bibliotheca p. 513.36 (cited by Deissmann LAE2 p. 98) οἱ γὰρ κόκκοι μετὰ τὴν ἐκ σήψεως νέκρωσιν καὶ φθορὰν ἀναζῶσι, ";for the seeds come to life again after death and destruction by decay.";
