νουθεσία, νουθεσιας, (νουθετέω, which see); admonition, exhortation: Wis. 16:6; 1 Corinthians 10:11; Titus 3:10; κυρίου, such as belongs to the Lord (Christ) or proceeds from him, Ephesians 6:4 (cf. Winers Grammar, 189 (178)). (Aristophanes ran. 1009; Diodorus 15, 7; besides in Philo, Josephus, and other recent writings for νουθέτησις and νουθετια, forms more common in the earlier writings cf. Lob. ad Phryn., p. 512; (Winers Grammar, 24).) (Cf. Trench, § xxxii.)

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

This common poetic word, which in the NT is found only in the plur. (Matthew 20:24, Mark 8:23), may be illustrated from the address in the Serapeum-dream P Par 51.10 (B.C. 160) (= Selections, p. 19) ὄμμα. . ψυχῆς θάρσ [ει, from the personal descriptions P Leid M i. 6 (ii/B.C.) ( = I. p. 59) ἀσ [θενῶν ] τοῖς ὄμμασι, P Lond 678.6 (B.C. 99–8) (= III. p. 18) ]δύνατ [ος ὄμμ ]ασι, BGU III. 713.9 (A.D. 41–2) ο ]ἰλὴ (l.οὐλὴ ὑπὸ ὄμμα ἀριστερά) (l. ρόν, and from the magic P Lond 121.325 (iii/A.D.) (= I. p. 95) ὄμμα φοβερόν. It may also be noted that in an address by the council of Hermopolis to the Imperial Procurator of the time of Gallienus, Eurip. Ion 732 is quoted in the form—εἰς ὄμματ᾽ εὔνου ἀνδρὸς ἐμβλέπειν γλυκύ) (CP Herm I. 125.7 = Chrest. I. p. 59). The MGr ὄμματι is generally contracted into μάτι, and ματιά μου is used as an endearing term of address ";light of my eye,"; ";my darling,"; see Thumb Handbook p. 340 and cf. ocelle, Catullus L. 19, ocelle mi, Plaut. Trin. 245 [ii. I. 18].
