Cyc. 389, cf. Ba. 736; πεζαὶ μ., = ἑταῖραι, Eup. 169; ᾄδειν ἐπὶ μόσχῳ for the prize of a calf (nisi leg. ἐπὶ Μόσχῳ), Ar. Ach. 13.

3. a calf, a bullock, a heifer; so everywhere in the Bible, and always masculine: Luke 15:23, 27, 30; Hebrews 9:12, 19; Revelation 4:7; (the Sept. chiefly for פַּר, a bull, especially a young bull; then for בָּקָר, cattle; for שׁור, an ox or a cow; also for עֵגֶל, a calf). ((Euripides, on.))

This classical word (found also in Philo), which in the NT is confined to Romans 9:4, ";the giving of the law,"; occurs in a royal petition of about A.D. 375, P Lips I. 35.7 τῆς θ ̣είας ὑμῶν καὶ φιλανθρώπου νο ̣[μ ]ο ̣θ [εσ ]ι ̣ας. Cf. Syll 790 (=.3 1157).98 (c. B.C. 100) διαπαραδιδόσ [θ ]ω [δὲ τὸ ψήφισμα τόδε καὶ τοῖς ] αἱρεθησομένοις μετὰ ταῦτα στρατηγοῖς [καὶ νομοφύ ]λαξιν νομοθεσίας τάξιν ἔχον, OGIS 326.26 (time of Attalus II.
