Vocabulary of the Greek NT

νεανίας is restored in P Oxy III. 471.114 (ii/A.D.) with reference to a boy of seventeen who had not been sent—ἐπὶ τὰ ] διδασκ ̣α ̣λε [ ]α ̣ κα ̣[ ] τ [ὰς προ ]σηκούσας τοῖς ν ̣[εανί ]α [ις ] τριβ [ ]ς, ";to the schools and the exercises proper for the young"; (Edd.) : cf. Syll 425 (=.3546B).25 (B.C. 216–14) εἰς τὸ ἔλαιον τοῖς νεανίοις (l. αις) στατῆρας δέκα. For νεανιεύομαι of acting with youthful recklessness see P Grenf II. 78.9 (A.D. 307). The word is derived from a hypothetical abstract noun *νε ϝ α ̄. ";youth"; (Boisacq, p. 659).
