The somewhat weakened sense of μανία in Acts 26:24, where it is contrasted with σωφροσύνης ῥήματα 25 : (cf. s.v. μαίνομαι), is seen in an unedited Tebtunis papyrus of ii/B.C.—φαίνῃ εἰς μανίαν ἐμπεπτωκέν [α ]ι, διὸ λόγον σαυτοῦ οὐ ποιεῖς καὶ ὑπ [ο ]μεμένηκας, ";you seem to have gone mad, for you pay no regard to yourself, and have gone off your head"; : cf. also PSI IV. 434.6 (B.C. 261–0) εἰδὼς οὖν αὐτοῦ τὴμ μανίαν συναντᾶν ἐκέλευον, ὅταν περιοδεύω, καὶ κωλῦσαί με, and BGU IV. 1024v. 3 (iv/v A.D.) φό [νο ]υ κατασ ̣η ̣μ ̣α ̣ι ̣ν ̣ο ̣μένου [αἰτίαν ] τὴν ἐπικει [μ ]έν ̣η ̣ν ̣ [σ ]ο ̣υ ̣ μ ̣α ̣νίαν [λέγεις ] ἔρωτος. For the adj. μανικός see the florilegium of apophthegms PSI II. 120.54 (iv/A.D. ?) ἐν ἀγορᾷ μὴ σπεῦδε, μηδὲ χειροτόνει λαλῶν · μανικὸν γάρ.
