For the epistolary formula ἐχάρην λίαν in 2 John 1:4, 3 John 1:3, we may compare BGU II. 632.10 (ii/A.D.) καὶ ἐπιγνούς σε ἐρρωμένην λίαν έχάρην, ";and when I knew that you were in sound health I rejoiced greatly,"; P Giss I. 21.3 (time of Trajan) λίαν ἐχάρην ἀκούσασα ὅτι ἔρ ̣ρωσαι : see also P. Par 42.3 (B.C. 156) λίαν σοι χάριν μεγάλην ἐσχήκαμεν. Otherwise the adv. is common, e.g. P Tebt I. 12.24 (B.C. 118) ἀποδέχομαι δὲ τὰ παρὰ σοῦ λίαν, ";I accept completely your views"; (Edd.), P Oxy II. 298.26 (i/A.D.) λίαν αὐτὸν βαρύνομαι, ";I am too severe with him"; (Edd.), ib. III. 525.4 (early ii/A.D.) λείαν τῷ πράγματι καταξύομαι, ";I am extremely worn out with the matter"; (Edd.), ib. IX. 1216.13 (ii/iii A.D.) λείαν γὰρ φιλῶ αὐτόν, ib. XIV. 1676.10 (iii/A.D.) λείαν ἐλυπήθην ὅτι οὐ παρεγένου ἰς τὰ γενέσια τοῦ παιδίου μου. The use with an adj., as in Matthew 4:8 al., may be illustrated by P Tebt II. 315.18 ii/A.D.) ὁ γὰρ ἄνθρωπος λείαν ἐστὶ [ν ] αὐστηρός.
