Κλήμης (cf. Buttmann, 16f (15)), Κλήμεντος, ὁ, Clement, a companion of Paul and apparently a member of the church at Philippi: Philippians 4:3. According to the rather improbable tradition of the catholic church, he is identical with that Clement who was bishop of Rome toward the close of the first century; (but see Lightfoot's Commentary on Philippians, at the passage cited, 'Detached Note'; Salmon in Dict. of Chris. Biogr. i., 555f).

This Lat. name Clçmçns appears in the nom. (not in NT) as Κλήμης with a gen. Κλήμεντος (Philippians 4:3) : cf. P Oxy II. 241.1 (c. A.D. 98) Καικίλλις (l.–ιος) Κλήμης τῷ ἀγρανόμῳ (l. ἀγορ –) χ (αί)ρειν with reference to the registration of a mortgage, also ib. 340 (A.D. 98—9), and Preisigke 4613 τὸ προσκύνημα Ἀντ [ω ]νίου Κλήμεντος.
