(v. infr.), impf. ἐκαθεζόμην in Prose, X. An. 1.5.9, Cyr. 5.3.25 (but freq. as aor. 2, And. 1.44, Th. 4.110, Pl. Euthd. 272e); in Poets, καθεζόμην Od. 9.417, A. Eu. 6, Ar. Lys. 1139: fut. καθεδοῦμαι Id. Ra. 200, Av. 727 (anap.), And. 1.111, Pl. Tht. 146a, D. 5.15; later καθεδήσομαι D.L. 2.72, καθεσθήσομαι LXX Leviticus 12:5 : aor. καθεσθείς AP 9.644.5 (Agath.), Paus. 9.3.4, Charito 3.2, but v. Luc. Sol. 11 (καθίζομαι, Pass. of καθίζω, which supplies the trans. sense, is more common in pres. and impf., but we have κατ' ἄρ' ἕζεαι Od. 10.378, καθεζόμεσθα E. Il. 24.126, etc.; κατ' ἄρ' ἕζευ ἐπὶ θρόνου ib. 522; κατ' ἄρ' ἕζετ' ἐπὶ.. λίθοισιν Od. 3.406; καθεζομένη πρόχνυ (v. πρόχνυ); so κ. ἐν.. εὐνατηρίοις S. Tr. 918; ἐπὶ ζυγοῖς ἀρχῆς E. Ph. 75; ἐς θρόνον A. Pr. 231; preside, Lys. l.c., Aeschin. 3.73; ἐνθαδί Ar. Ra. 200; οὐ λαχόντες προεδρεύειν, ἀλλ' ἐκ παρασκευῆς καθεζόμενοι taking their seats, Aeschin. 3.3: Medic., Hp. Epid. 7.3.
2. sit down in, occupy, a country, encamp, Th. 2.18, 7.77; settle, εἰς χώραν OGI 201.13 (Nubia, vi A.D.).
II remain seated, in various senses:
1 sit still, with collat. notion of inaction, τίφθ' οὕτως κατ' ἄρ' ἕζεαι ἶσος ἀναύδῳ; Od. 10.378, cf. 6.295.
2. sit as suppliants, ἱκέται καθεζόμεσθα βώμιοι E. Heracl. l.c.; πρὸς τὰ ἱερὰ ἱκετῶν καθεζομένων Th. 3.70, cf. Ar. Lys. 1139, D. 18.107.
3. sit for one's portrait, Porph. Plot. 1.
4. of a teacher, πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἐκαθεζόμην διδάσκων Matthew 26:55.
καθέζομαι; imperfect ἐκαθεζόμην; (from Homer down); to sit down, seat oneself, sit: John 20:12; followed by ἐν with the dative of place, Matthew 26:55; Luke 2:46; John 11:20; Acts 6:15; followed by ἐπί with the genitive, Acts 20:9 L T Tr WH; by ἐπί with the dative, John 4:6; ἐκεῖ, John 6:3 Tdf.; (οὗ where, Acts 2:2 Lachmann Cf. Rutherford, New Phryn., p. 336f; Buttmann, 56 (49); 60 (52). Compare: παρακαθέζομαι.)

For this verb, which is always purely durative in the NT ";sit,"; not ";sit down"; (Proleg. p. 118), we may cite Syll 73755 (c. A.D. 175) ἐὰν δὲ ἱερὸς παῖς ἐξωτικὸς καθεσθεὶς ἀναλώσῃ τὰ πρὸς τοὺς θεοὺς καὶ τὸ Βακχεῖον, ἔστω μετὰ τοῦ πατρὸς ἰόβακχος ἐπὶ μιᾷ σπονδῇ τοῦ πατρός. In the v/A.D. Acts of the martyr Paphnutius we read—Ἄπα Παπνούτιος δὲ ἐκαθέσθη ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν, ε ̣̓κ ̣[αθέσθησαν δὲ αὐ ]ταὶ παρὰ τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ (PSI I. 2621) : cf. the Silco rescript OGIS 201.18 (vi/A.D.) οὐκ ἀφῶ αὐτοὺς καθεζόμενοι (for καθεζομένους) εἰς χώραν αὐτῶν,20 οὐκ ἀφῶ αὐτοὺς καθεσθῆναι εἰς τὴν σκιάν. Vett. Val. p. 7824 ποιοῦσι γὰρ ἄρχοντας πόλεων καὶ ἐπὶ δικαστηρίου καθεζομένους.
