1. one who fights from a chariot, Hom. (only in Il.), opp. πεζός, 2.810; either of the driver or of the hero who fights, 12.66, 15.270; also of one who drives in a chariot-race, 23.262.
2. horseman, rider, cavalryman, ἰππήων στρότος Sapph. Supp. 5.1, cf. Hdt. 3.88, 9.49, A. Pers. 14 (anap.), Arist. Pol. 1270a29, etc.; τῆς πολιτείας ἱ. a public courier, Aristaenet. 1.26.
