1. Pass., to be spoken allegorically, Galatians 4:24; ἀλληγορεῖται ἁ Ἀπόλλων εἰς τὸν Ἥλιον, Sch. S. Aj. 186.

2. abs., speak figuratively or metaphorically, Demetr. Eloc. 151, 285; speak allegorically, J. AJProoem.

3. ἀλληγορ-ητής, οῦ, ὁ, allegorical expounder, Eust. 123.32.

ἀλληγορέω, (ῶ: (present passive participle ἀλληγοροὺμενος); i. e., ἄλλο μέν ἀγορεύω, ἄλλο δέ νοέω, "aliud verbis, aliud sensu ostendo (Quintilian instt. 8, 6, 44), to speak allegorically or in a figure: Galatians 4:24 (Philo, Josephus, Plutarch, and grammatical writers; (cf. Meyer on Galatians, the passage cited).)

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

P Oxy II. 237 v. 15 (A.D. 186) οὐκ ἀλλαχόθεν ἡγήσατο τὴν ἐξέτασιν ἔσεσθαι serves to support John 10:1. The word is classical, though assailed by Atticists (Thayer).
