1. well-arranged, conveniently placed, ὀστέα Hp. Off. 15: Comp. - ώτερος Id. Fract. 4; ἐν εὐ. τόπῳ in a suitable place, Ἀρχ.Δελτ. 7.200 (Ephesus). b. of the ashes of a corpse, easily stowed, A. Ag. 444 (lyr.); so of the corpse, laid out for burial (cf. εὐθετέω), Supp.Epigr. 1.449 (Phrygia, iii A. D.); εὔ. σάκος, ἀρβύλαι, well-fitting, ready for use, A. Th. 642 (Sch., εὔκυκλον cod. Med.), Fr. 259; εὔ. εἴς τι D.S. 2.57; πρός τι Id. 5.37; εὔθετόν ἐστι c. inf., it is convenient.., Id. 21.21; καιρὸς εὔ. LXX Psalms 32:6(31).6, D.S. 5.57.

2. of persons, well-adapted, εἰς τοὺς τραγῳδοὺς εὔ., οὐκ εἰς τὸν βίον Philem. 105.5; εἰς, πρὸς φιλίαν, Phld. εὔθετος, εὔθετον (from εὖ and θετός), Greek writings from Aeschylus and Hippocrates down; properly, well-placed;

a. fit: εἰς τί, Luke 9:62 R G; (34) (Diodorus 2, 57, et al.); with the dative of the thing for which: Luke 9:62 L T Tr WH (τῷ πράγματι, Nicolaus Damascenus, Stobaeus, fl. 14, 7 (149, 4)).

b. useful: τίνι, Hebrews 6:7 (some would make the dative here depend on the participle); (of time, seasonable, Psalm 31:6 (); Susanna, 15).

For εὔθετος = ";adapted,"; ";suitable"; for a place or office, as in Luke 9:62, cf. P Tebt I. 27.44 (B.C. 113) ἵνα μὲν πρὸς ταῖς προειρημέναις χρείαις εὔθετοι κατασταθῶσιν, ";see that suitable persons are appointed to the aforesaid offices"; (Edd.), P Flor I. 3.8 (A.D. 301) ἐργάτας. . . ὄντ [α ]ς εὐθέτους καὶ ἐπιτηδείους (contrast P Amh II. 64.12 (A.D. 107) λέγων τοὺς σὺν αὐτῶι κατασταθέντας ἐ [π ]ιμε ̣λ ̣η ̣τ ̣ὰς βαλανείου [ ]θέτους, ";inefficient";), Syll 653.74 (Mysteries inscr. from Andania—B.C. 91) αὐλητὰς καὶ κιθαριστάς, ὅσους κα εὑρίσκωντι εὐθέτους ὑπάρχοντας, so .148 ῥαβδοφόρους τοὺς εὐθετωτάτους. For a similar reference to persons see Polyb. xxvi. 5. 6 πρὸς πᾶσαν σωματικὴν χρείαν. . εὔθετος. The meaning ";seasonable,"; as in Psalms 31:6 [MT Psalms 32:6], is found in Diod. v. 57. 4 οἱ Αἰγύπτιοι καιρὸν εὔθετον λαβόντες. See also s.v. ἀνεύθετος and ἀθετέω. Hobart p. 75 gives exx. from medical authors.
