1. reference, esp. to an arbiter in decision of a law-suit, ἠξίουν δίκης ἐπιτροπὴν σφίσι γενέσθαι ἢ ἐς πόλιν τινὰ ἢ ἰδιώτην Th. 5.41; ἡ ἐ. τούτῳ πρὸς Παρμένοντα γέγονε D. 33.23; εἰς ἐ. ἔρχεσθαι ib.14; ἡ ἐ. ἐγένετό μοι ib.16; τὴν ἐ. λῦσαι ibid.; ἀνέντες τὴν ἐ. having declined it, Th. 5.31.

2. generally, power to decide, ἐ. διδόναι τινὶ περί τινος Hp. Decent. 17, cf. Schwyzer 195.10 (Crete (from Delos), ii B.C.); διδόναι τῇ συγκλήτῳ τὴν ἐ.
