ἐπαρκ-έω,

I fut. -έσω (v. infr.): aor. inf. ἐπαρκέσσαι A.R. 2.1161, cf. IG 5(1).730.18:

1. to be strong enough for a thing, in Hom. always of cases of danger or injury: 1. c. acc. rei et dat. pers., ward off something from one, οὐδέ τί οἱ τό γ' ἐπήρκεσε λυγρὸν ὄλεθρον Il. 2.873; οὔτε τι Τηλέμαχος τό γ' ἐπήρκεσεν Od. 17.568; οὐδὲν γὰρ αὐτῳ ταῦτ' ἐπαρκέσει τὸ μὴ οὐ πεσεῖν prohibebit quominus.., A. Pr. 918.

2. c. acc. rei, ward off, prevent, ἐπαρκέσσαι κακότητα A.R. 2.1161; σέ τοι μόνον δέδορκα πημονάν (Reiske for ποιμένων) ἐ. S. Aj. 360 (lyr.).

3. c. dat. pers. only, help, assist, Thgn. 871, Hdt. 1.91, Lys. 13.93, 1 Timothy 5:10, etc.: rarely c. acc. pers., E. Or. 803 (troch.): abs., τίς ἄρ' ἐπαρκέσει; who will aid? A. Th. 91 (anap.), cf. S. OC 777.

II supply, furnish, ἄκος δ' οὐδὲν ἐπἤρκεσαν, τὸ μὴ πόλιν.. παθεῖν A. Ag. 1170 (lyr.); ἐ. τινί τι Pl. Prt. 321a, cf. Ar. Pl. 830, LXX 1 Maccabees 11:35, etc.; also ἐ. τινὶ τῶν ἑαυτοῦ impart to him a share of.., X. Mem. 1.2.60: c. dat. rei, supply with, πέπλοις E. Cyc. 301.

III

1. abs., to be sufficient, enough, ὅσσον ἐπαρκεῖ Song of Solomon 5:1 (v.l. ἀπαρκεῖ) ; ἐπαρκέσει νόμος ὅδ' this law shall prevail, S. Ant. 612 (lyr.).

2. stand to the credit of, c. dat., γενεᾷ Pi. N. 6.60.

Thayer's Expanded Definition

ἐπαρκέω, ἐπάρκω; 1 aorist (ἐπηρκεσα), subjunctive ἐπαρκέσω; properly, to avail or be strong enough for ... (see ἀρκέω); hence,

a. to ward off or drive away, τί τίνι, a thing for another's advantage equivalent to a thing from anyone (Homer), to defend.

b. to aid, give assistance, relieve (Herodotus, Aeschyl, others): τίνι, 1 Timothy 5:10; middle, to give aid from one's own resources, 1 Timothy 5:16 according to the reading ἐπαρκείσθω (L text T Tr WH marginal reading) for ἐπαρκείτω (R G L marginal reading WH text); (κατά δύναμιν ἀλλήλοις ἐπάρκειν, Xenophon, mem. 2, 7, 1).

P Par 46.5 (B.C. 153) εἰ ἔρρωσαι καὶ τὰ π ̣α ̣ρ ̣ ̣ τῶν θ ̣ε ̣ῶν κατὰ λόγον σοι χρηματίζεται, εἴη ἄν, ὡς βούλομαι, καὶ αὐτὸς δὲ μετ ̣ρίως ἐπ ̣[α ]ρ [κῶ —where however the reading is far from certain : see Witkowski .2, p. 86. See also Cagnat IV. 743 (Eumeneia—time of Alexander Severus = C. and B. ii. No. 232.18) τοῦτο γὰρ ἧν μοι τερπνὸν ἐπαρκεῖν εἴ τις ἔχρῃζε —a Jew speaks. In Polyb. i. 51, 10 the verb is used as nearly synonymous with ἐπιβοηθέω : cf. 1 Timothy 5:10; 1 Timothy 5:16.
