ἐπάναγκες (ἀνάγκη (hence, literally, on compulsion)), necessarily: πλήν τῶν ἐπάναγκες τούτων, besides these things which are necessarily imposed, Acts 15:28 (Buttmann, 27. (24)). (Herodotus, Andocides (), Plato, Demosthenes, Aristotle, Dionysius Halicarnassus, Plutarch, Aelian, Epictetus.)

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

This word, which in the NT occurs only in Acts 15:28, and is described by Blass (ad l.) as a ";doctum vocabulum"; which Luke might naturally be expected to use, may be illustrated by P Ryl II. 65.5 (B.C. 67?) δι᾽ ἧς ἐπάναγκες τὸν παραβησόμενον. . . ἀποτεῖσαι τῶι ἔθνει ἐπίτιμον, ";where by it was provided that any person breaking the agreement should be compelled to pay to the association a fine,"; P Flor I. 50.107 (A.D. 268) ω ̣[στε ̣ ἑκάστην μερίδα ἐπάναγκες χορηγεῖν, P Oxy I. 102.18 (A.D. 306) βεβαιουμένης δέ μοι τῆς ἐπιδ [ο ]χῆς ἐπάναγκες ἀποδώσω τὰ λυπὰ (l. λοιπὰ) τοῦ φόρου, and from the inscrr. Syll 737.86 (c. A.D. 175) ὁ δὲ ἐπάνανκες ἀγορὰν ἀγέτω, ib. 871.9 (with reference to a Trust) ὅπως ἐπάναγκες αὐτοῖς οἱ δ [εό ]μενοι τῆς πορθμείας χρῶνται. See also Menander Fragm. p. 176 οὐδὲν διαβολῆς ἐστιν ἐπιπονώτερον · | τὴν ἐν ἑτέρῳ γὰρ κειμένην ἁμαρτίαν | εἰς μέμψιν ἰδίαν αὐτὸν ἐπάναγκες λαβεῖν. For ἐπάναγκον, see P Fay 91.15 (A.D. 99) ἐπάνα [γ ]κον ο ̣υ ̣͂̔ν παρεμβαλεῖν τὴν Θ. ἐν [τ ]ῶι. . . ἐλαιουργίωι. . . [ ]λ ̣α ̣ϊκ ̣οὺς καρποὺς ἐκπεππτωκότας (l. ἐκπεπτ —) εἰς τὸ ἐνεστὸ (ς) τρίτον ἔτος, ";Th. is accordingly obliged to feed the olive-press with the olive produce included in the present third year,"; and for ἐπαναγκάζω, see P Oxy II. 281.25 (A.D. 20–50) ὅπως ἐπαναγκασθῇ συνεχόμενος ἀποδοῦναί μ (om.) μοι τὴν [φ ]ερνὴν σὺν ἡμιολίᾳ, ";that he may be compelled perforce to pay back my dowry increased by half its amount"; (Edd.), and ib. XII. 1470.16 (A.D. 336) ἐπαναγκασθῆναι τὸν αὐτὸν Δημητρια ̣ν ̣ο ̣, ν ̣ κτλ.
