Vocabulary of the Greek NT

BGU I. 275.11 (A.D. 215) καὶ ἐπείρασαν αὐτὴν (sc. μηχανὴν) ἐπανοῖξαι καὶ οὐκ ἐξείσχυ ̣σαν ̣, P Oxy VIII. 1120.7 (early iii/A.D.) ἀλλὰ οὗτος ἐξείσχυσεν τὰ βιβλείδια ἀθετηθῆναι, ";but his influence procured the rejection of the petition."; See also Vett. Val. p. 288.12 πολλάκις γὰρ ὑπ᾽ ὄψιν προδείξαντες τὸ ἀποτέλεσμα ἠτόνησαν διὰ τὸ ἐπὶ δυναστικοῦ τόπου ἕτερον τετευχότα ἐξισχῦσαι. These examples make it at least doubtful whether it is possible to give the verb the intensive meaning ";be fully able,"; ";be strong"; (RV), often assigned to it in Ephesians 3:18.
