Vocabulary of the Greek NT

ἐξετάζω is found along with ἀκριβῶς, as in Matthew 2:8, in P Oxy II. 237vi. 31 (A.D. 186) καὶ ὅτι φθάνει τὸ πρᾶγμα ἀκρειβῶς [ἐξ ]ητασμένον, ";and the fact that a searching inquiry into the affair had already been held"; (Edd.). Other examples of this common verb are P Gen I. 54.30 ἐξέτασον περὶ τοῦ πράγματος τούτου ὅτι οὐδεμία διαφορὰ οὔκ ἐστιν, P Oxy III. 582 (ii/A.D.) ἐξήτασα ἕνεκα τοῦ ἄλλου χαλκοῦ καὶ τοῦ συμβόλου, BGU II. 380.5 (iii/A.D.) (= Selections, p. 104) ἐξέτασε (l. ἐξήτασα) περὶ τῆς σωτηρίας σου καὶ τῆς πεδίων (l. παιδίων) σου, and P Grenf I. 53.28 (iv/AD.) μὴ ἐμὲν ἐξέταζε ἀλλὰ τ [ο ] [ς ] πρεσβυτέρους τῆς ἐκκλησίας where, as the editor points out, the meaning is ";if you do not believe me, ask the elders of the church."; In P Amh II. 79.50 (c. A.D. 186) the verb is construed with the gen.—ὅταν γὰρ ἐξεστάσῃς (l. ἐξετάσῃς) ἑνὸς ἑκάστου [τῶ ]ν ἀρχόντων. For the pass, see P Petr III. 20iii. 6 Δημήτριος δὲ ἐξητάσ ̣[θη ] τοῦ μὴ γνῶσιν εἰστεθ [ ]ναι, P Tebt II. 335.11 (mid. iii/A.D.) Ἑρμα ̣[ίσκος δὲ ] εὕρηται καὶ ἐξήτασται. From the inscrr. we may add OGIS 773.5 (iv/iii B.C.) ἀνακαλεσάμενος τοὺς τριηράρχους καὶ ἐξετάσας ἀνέσωισε τὰ ἀνδράποδα μετὰ πάσης φιλοτιμίας, and Syll 356.12 (B.C. 6) ἐξετάσαι προστάξας. . . διὰ βασάνων = quaerere tormentis, of slaves after the murder of their master. The subst. is used forensically, as in Wisdom of Solomon 1:9, 3 Maccabees 7:5, in P Oxy X. 1272.21 (a complaint of theft—A.D. 144) ἀξιῶ. . ἀχθῆναι ἐπὶ σὲ τὸν Ἡρᾶν. . . καὶ τὴν δέουσαν ἐξέ [τ ]ασιν γενέσθαι, ";I ask that Heras should be brought before you and that the proper inquiry should be made,"; and so saepe. For the derivation of the verb see s.v. ἀνετάζω. MGr ()ξετάζω, ξητῶ, ";prove,"; ";try.";
