ἐνειλ-έω,
I wrap in, τι ὀθονίῳ Dsc. 5.72: — Med., τινὰ κακοῖσι Q.S. 14.294: — Pass., to be enwrapped, ἐν [τῇ γῇ ] Arist. Mu. 396a14; ἐν τῷ ἱματίῳ LXX 1 Samuel 21:9(10); τῃ λεοντῇ Philostr. Her. 12a. 1; ῥάκεσι Artem. 1.13; ἱστίοις δοράτια ἐνειλημένα Aen.Tact. 29.6, cf. 31.7; φύλλοις Dsc. 2.80.
II metaph., engage, ἐνίων αὑτοὺς ἐνειληκότων οἰκονομίαις PTeb. 24.62 (ii B.C.): — Pass., to be engaged, entangled in or with, τοῖς πολεμίοις Plu. Art. 11; ὅπλοις Id. Brut. 45; ὥσπερ θηρίον ταῖς πάντων χερσίν Id. Caes. 66; ὥσπερ ἄρκυσιν ἐνειλημένους prob. for -λημμ-, J. BJ 6.2.8; βρέφη-ημένα τὰς χεῖρας Artem.l.c.; come to blows with, PRyl. 144.18 (i A.D.).
ἐνειλέω, ἐνείλω: 1 aorist ἐνείλησα; to roll in, wind in: τινα τίνι, one in anything, Mark 15:46. (1 Samuel 21:9; (Aristotle, mund. 4, p. 396a, 14; Philo), Plutarch, Artemidorus Daldianus, Philostr., others.)

For the bad sense in which this forcible NT ἅπ. εἰρ. (Mark 15:46) is generally used, see Abbott as cited s.v. ἐντυλίσσω : cf. P Tebt I. 24.62 (B.C. 117) ἐνίων μὲν αὑτοὺς ἐνειληκότων οἰκονομ [ίαις κτλ., ";some have wormed themselves into the positions of oeconomus,"; etc., and P Ryl II. 144.18 (A.D. 38) ἐνειλούμενός ̣ μοι, of a violent struggle. On the other hand, the verb is colourless in P Oxy VIII. 1153.23 (i/A.D.) τῆς γινομέ (νης) συνθέσεως τὸ πρόσχρωμον ἐνείλικται τῇδε τῇ ἐπιστολῇ, ";a pattern of the colour of the dress that is being made is enclosed in tliis letter"; (Ed.).
