b. intentness (of mind), earnestness: ἐν ἐκτένεια, earnestly, Acts 26:7. (2 Macc. 14:38; Judith 4:9. Cf. Grimm on 3Macc. 6:41 (where he refers to Cicero, ad Att. 10, 17, 1).)

This subst., which is unknown to Attic Greek (cf. Lob. Phryn. p. 311), is found in its ethical meaning, as in Acts 26:7 (cf. 2 Maccabees 14:38 al.), in P Par 63i. 12 (B.C. 164) (= P Petr III. p. 18) καλῶς ποιήσεις τὴν πᾶσαν προσενεγκάμενος ἐκτένε ̣ι ̣αν καὶ π [ρο ]νοηθείς, ";you will do well in using every effort and taking every precaution"; (Mahaffy) : cf. from the inscrr. Priene 108.382 (after B.C. 129) ἡ τοῦ δήμου πρὸς τοὺς εὐεργετοῦντας [αὐτὸν ἐ ]κτένεια δι᾽ αἰῶνος ἐπίσημον ἔχῃ τὴν χα ̣[ριν, IMAe 1032.10 (ii/B.C.) τὰν πᾶσαν ἐκτένειαν καὶ κακοπαθίαν παρεχόμενος, Syll 732.28 (i/B.C.) ἡ σύνοδος ἀποδεξαμένη τὴν ἐκτένειαν καὶ φιλοτιμίαν αὐτοῦ, and Cagnat IV. 984.6 μετὰ πάσης ἐκτενείας καὶ λαμπρότητος.
