I to be abroad, to be on one's travels, Hdt. 1.30, S. OT 114, etc.; to be in exile, Pl. Lg. 864e; εἰς πόλιν PPetr. 3p.76.
II c. acc., travel through, δύσιν καὶ ἀνατολήν IG 14.905.
ἐκδημέω, ἐκδήμω; 1 aorist infinitive ἐκδημῆσαι; (ἔκδημος away from home);
1. to go abroad (Herodotus, Sophocles, Plato, Josephus, others); hence, universally, to emigrate, depart: ἐκ τοῦ σώματος, from the body as the earthly abode of the spirit, 2 Corinthians 5:8.
2. to be or live abroad: 2 Corinthians 5:9; ἀπό τοῦ κυρίου, abode with whom is promised us, 2 Corinthians 5:6; in these examples opposed to ἐνδήμω, which see

PSI IV. 410.2 (iii/B.C.) ἐξεδημήσατε οὐκ ἀνανγείλαντές μοι ἃ εἶπεν Ἀμμώνιος περί μου. BGU IV. 1197.7 (B.C. 4) ἐκδημήσαντος δὲ σοῦ εἰς τοὺ ̣ς ̣ ἐ ̣κ ̣[τὸ ]ς ̣ [τόπους. P Tebt II. 316.20 (A.D. 99) ἐὰν δὲ μεταβαίνωμεν ἢ ἐγδημῶμεν [μ ]εταδώσωμεν κτλ., ";but if we change our residence, or go abroad, we shall give notice,"; etc.—a declaration required of ephebi in view of their enrolment in the Alexandrian demes. P Oxy I. 59.16 (A.D. 292) ἵνα. . η τάχος ἐκδημῆσαι, ";that no time be lost in his departure"; (Edd.). For the subst. see Syll 276.13 (c. Val. p. 16.33 εὔθετοι ταῖς εἰς στρατιὰν καὶ ἐκδημίαν γενέσεσιν, and for the form ἐγδημία BGU III. 1011ii. 1 (ii/B.C.) τὸν [τῆ ]ς ἐγδημίας τοῦ Μεννέου χρόνον, PSI IV. 330.5 (B.C. 258–7) οὐ γὰρ [ἐδοκί ]μασα ἄνευ σου τὴν ἐγδημίαν ποιήσασθαι.
