Vocabulary of the Greek NT

In OGIS 90.3 (Rosetta stone—B.C. 196) ἐκγόνου θεῶν Φιλοπατόρων, Dittenberger renders . by ";filii,"; and compares the restoration in ib. 91.2, but Wilcken (Archiv iii. p. 321) does not think . suitable in a pure Greek inscr. and prefers τοῦ ἐ [κ βασιλέως ] Πτολ. κτλ. In ib. 197.8 Wilcken (l.c. ) renders ἔκγονον by ";Urenkel,"; ";great-grandchild"; : cf. 1 Timothy 5:4 where AV renders ";nephews"; = ";grandchildren,"; according to the original, but now antiquated, sense of the word. The plur. is common in the general sense of ";descendants,"; e.g. P Lille I. 4.27 (B.C. 218–7) ὧι ὑπῆρχεν αὐτῶι ἡ γῆ καὶ ἐκγόνοις, CPR I. 1.4 (A.D. 83–4), P Oxy IX. 1200.25 (A.D. 266) κρατεῖν σε καὶ κυριεύειν σὺν ἐκγόνοις καὶ τοῖς παρὰ σοῦ μεταλημψομένοις τοῦ προκειμένου ψειλοῦ τόπου, and so ib. 1208.17 (A.D. 291). Down to about B.C. 300 the form ἔγγονος is found in Attic inscrr. : see Meisterhans Gr. p. 107 and cf. Mayser Gr. p. 228. Εγγονος survives in MGr = ";grandchild.";
