1. each, opp. the whole body, Il. 2.805, etc.: sg. with pl. Verb, ἔβαν οἶκόνδε ἕκαστος they went home each to his own house, 1.606; δεδμήμεσθα ἕκαστος 5.878, cf. Hdt. 3.158; so in Att., Ar. Pl. 785, Pl. Prt. 327e, etc.; ὅτι ἕκαστος ἐπίστασθε ἀγαθόν X. Smp. 3.3: sg. in apposition with pl. Noun or Pron., which expresses the whole, Τρῶας δὲ τρόμος αἰνὸς ὑπήλυθε γυῖα ἕκαστον Il. 7.215; ὔμμι..ἑκάστῳ 15.109; αἱ δὲ γυναῖκες..θαύμαζον..ἑκάστη 18.496, etc.; Περσίδες δ'.. ἑκάστα..λείπεται A. Pers. 135 (lyr.); αἱ ἄλλαι πᾶσαι [ τέχναι ] τὸ αὑτῆς ἑκάστη ἔργον ἐργάζεται Pl. R. 346d, cf. Grg. 503e; ὅστις ἕκαστος every one which.. (nisi leg. ὥς τις), Hes. Th. 459.

2. the Art. is sts. added to the Subst. (so regularly in earlier Att. Inscrr., IG 12.22.14, al., exc. ἑκάστου μηνός ib.6.125) with which ἕκαστος agrees, in which case ἕκαστος is commonly put first, καθ' ἑ. τὴν ἡμέραν every single day, Isoc. 12.211, etc.; περὶ ἑ. τῆς τέχνης Pl. Phdr. 274e: also following the Subst., κατὰ τὸν οξπλίτην ἕκαστον Th. 5.49; κατὰ τὴν ἡμέραν ἑκάστην Id. 6.63, al.

II in pl.,

1. all and each severally, Il. 1.550, al., A. Supp. 932, etc.; οἷστισιν ἑκάστοις to whichsoever severally, Pl. Lg. 799a.

2. each of two or more groups or parties, Od. 9.164, Hdt. 1.169, A. Pr. 491, Th. 6.77, etc.

1. strengthd. by the addition of other Prons., εἷς ἕ. (v. εἷς); εἷς τις ἕ. S. Ant. 262; ἕκαστός τις each one, Pi. N. 4.92, Th. 3.45, etc.; ταῦτα ἕκαστα Hdt. 5.13, etc.; αὔθ' ἕκαστα all in exact detail, A. Pr. 950.

2. with Preps., esp. κατά, καθ' ἕκαστον singly, by itself, Pl. Tht. 188a, al.; καθ' ἕ. καὶ σύμπαντα Id. Sph. 259b; τὸ καθ' ἕ., τὰ καθ' ἕκαστα, particulars, Arist. Ph. 189a6, EN 1143b4, al.; παρ' ἕκαστον, παρ' ἕκαστα, in every case, Plb. 4.82.5, 3.57.4, etc.; παρ' ἕκαστον καὶ ἔργον καὶ λόγον διδάσκοντες Pl. 3. ὡς ἕκαστοι each by himself, Hdt. 6.79, Th. 1.15, etc.: in sg., τῶν δὲ ὡς ἑκάστῳ θύειν θέλει Hdt. 1.132, cf. Pi. P. 9.98; οὐχ ὡς ἕ. ἀλλὰπάντες Arist. ἕκαστος, ἑκάστη, ἕκαστον, the Sept. for אִישׁ (from Homer down), each, every;

a. joined to a substantive: ἕκαστον δένδρον, Luke 6:44; ἑκάστῳ στρατιώτῃ, John 19:23; κατά μῆνα ἕκαστον, every month, Revelation 22:2 (not Rec.); καθ' ἑκάστην ἡμέραν, Hebrews 3:13; cf. Winers Grammar, 111 (106); Buttmann, § 127, 30. preceded by εἷς, Latinunusquisque, every one: with a substantive, Ephesians 4:16; Revelation 22:2 Rec. b. used substantively: John 7:53 (Rec.); Acts 4:35; Romans 2:6; Galatians 6:4, etc.; once plural ἕκαστοι: Revelation 6:11 Rec. With a partitive genitive added: ἡμῶν, Romans 14:12; ὑμῶν, Luke 13:15; 1 Corinthians 1:12; Hebrews 6:11; αὐτῶν, John 6:7 (R G); τῶν σπερμάτων, 1 Corinthians 15:38. εἷς ἕκαστος, every one (see εἷς, 4 b.): without a partitive genitive, Acts 20:31; Colossians 4:6; with a partitive genitive, Luke 4:40; Acts 2:3; Acts 17:27; 1 Corinthians 12:18, etc. ἕκαστος, when it denotes individually, every one of many, is often added appositively to nouns and pronouns and verbs in the plural number (Matthiae, ii., p. 764f; (Winers Grammar, 516 (481); Buttmann, 131 (114))): ἡμεῖς ἀκούομεν ἕκαστος, Acts 2:8; σκορπισθῆτε ἕκαστος, John 16:32; ἐπορεύοντο πάντες ..., ἕκαστος ..., Luke 2:3; add, Acts 3:26; 1 Peter 4:10; Revelation 5:8; Revelation 20:13; likewise εἷς ἕκαστος, Acts 2:6; Acts 21:26; ὑμεῖς οἱ καθ' ἕνα ἕκαστος τήν ἑαυτοῦ γυναῖκα ἀγαπάτω, you one by one, each one of you severally, Ephesians 5:33. In imitation of the Hebrew, ἕκαστος τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ (לְאָחִיו אִישׁ, Genesis 26:31), Matthew 18:35; μετά τοῦ πλησίον αὐτοῦ (אֶל־רֵעֵהוּ אִישׁ, Judges 6:29, etc.), Ephesians 4:25, cf. Hebrews 8:11 Rec.

P Fay 91.42 (A.D. 99) ἕκαστα ποιήσω καθὼς πρόκιται, ib. 100.6 (A.D. 99) μετὰ κυρίων ἑκάστ [η ]ς τοῦ ἀνδρός, ";with their respective guardians their husbands"; (Edd.), P Oxy X. 1278.24 (A.D. 214) ἕκαστον δὲ μέρος π [α ]ραδοῦν [αι ἑ ]κ ̣α ̣τέρῳ, ";each party is to deliver to the other"; (Edd.), ib. VI. 886.16 (a magical formula—iii/A.D.) ἐπίγρ (αψον) ἐν ἑκάστῳ τῶν φύλλων τὰ τῶν θεῶν ὀνόματα. The phrase καθ᾽ ἑκάστην ἡμέραν, as in Hebrews 3:13 is common, e.g. P Fay 130.5 (iii/A.D.), and similarly καθ᾽ ἕκαστον μῆνα, καθ᾽ ἕκαστον ἔτος. For εἶς ἕκαστος, see P Tebt II. 397.1 (A.D. 198) ε ̄ ἐξεδό (θησαν) ἑνὶ ἑκάστῳ, ";5 copies were issued, one to each one"; (Edd.).
