Thayer's Expanded Definition

εἶτα, adverb of time, then; next; after that: Mark 8:25; Luke 8:12; John 13:5; John 19:27; John 20:27; James 1:15; with the addition of a genitive absolutely to define it more precisely, Mark 4:17; as in classic Greek, it stands in enumerations, to mark a sequence depending either on temporal succession, as Mark 4:28 (see εἶτεν); 1 Corinthians 15:5-7 (εἶτα (T ἔπειτα, so in marginal reading Tr WH) ... ἔπειτα ... ἔπειτα ... εἶτα (T ἔπειτα, so in marginal reading L Tr WH)); 1 Corinthians 15:24 (ἔπειτα ... εἶτα); 1 Timothy 2:13; or on the nature of the things enumerated, 1 Corinthians 12:28 (πρῶτον ... δεύτερον ... τρίτον ... ἔπειτα ... εἶτα for which L T Tr WH ἔπειτα); (1 Timothy 3:10); in arguments it serves to add a new reason, furthermore (German sodann): Hebrews 12:9.

STRONGS NT 1534: εἶτεν εἶτεν a very rare (Ionic) form for εἶτα (which see): Mark 4:28 T WH. (Cf. Kuenen et Cobet, Nov. Test. etc. praef., p. xxxiii.; Lob. Phryn., p. 124, also Pathol. Gr. Element. 2:155; Stephanus' Thesaurus under the word εἶτεν, also under the word ἔπειτεν.)

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

εἶτα is praised by Phrynichus (ed. Lobeck, p. 124) as against the ";barbarous"; εἶτεν, but it occurs frequently alike in the New Menander and in vernacular documents : see e.g. P Fay 12.20 (c. B.C. 103) ἐξέδυσαν ὃ περ [ιε ]βεβλήμην ἱμάτιον καὶ τοῦτο ἀπηλλάγησαν ἔχοντ [ες ἐ ]ξέντες γυμνόν. εἶθ᾽ οὕτω ̣ς ̣ με ̣τ ̣᾽ ἐνδύματος. . . ὑπὸ τῶν γνωρίμων κτλ. ";they stripped me of the garment I was wearing, and went off with it, sending me forth naked. Afterwards, a garment having been (supplied) by my friends,"; etc. (Edd.). BGU II. 665.10 (i/A.D.) [γ ]ὼ τῷ πατρί μου γράψω τὸ μὲν πρῶτον περὶ τοῦ τοκετοῦ αὐτῆς τὸ ἀνανκαιότερον, εἶτα καὶ περὶ τῆς διαλλαγῆς, ib. IV. 1019.4 (mid. ii/A.D.) πολλὰς καταστάσεις πρὸς αὐτὸν πεποίηται. Ε [ ]τα καὶ ἐπὶ Νεοκύδην τὸν γενόμενον δικαιοδότην ἧκεν, and P Lond 1173.6 (A.D. 125) (= III. p. 208) ἐπ [έτρε ]ψάς [μ ]οι διὰ λόγον μηκέτι κατερ [γάζεσθαι ] ε [ ]τ ̣α τὸ ἐμὲ δαπανῆσαι ἀπὸ τῆ [ς ] συμ [φ ]ωνίας ἧς ἐποίησας πρὸς τοὺς [ἐργά ]τας. These exx. confirm Hort’s comment on James 1:15 that ";εἶτα, when historical . . . marks a fresh and distinct incident."; This force is considerably weakened in the boy’s letter to his father, P Oxy I. 119.6 (ii/iii A.D.) (= Selections, p. 103), where the word hardly admits of translation—οὐ μὴ γράψω σε ἐπιστολήν, οὔτε λαλῶ σε, οὔτε υἱγένω σε εἶτα, ";I won’t write you a letter, or speak to you, or wish you health no more.";
